DHL to develop new mega parcel center near Berlin, Germany

LBR Staff Writer Published 16 March 2018

Deutsche Post DHL Group is set to develop a new 165,000m² mega parcel center near Berlin in Germany.

The new hub, which will be developed at the town of Ludwigsfelde in Brandenburg, will create up to 600 new jobs, once operational.

The new hub will be constructed in around 68 hectare in the area called An der Eichspitze, which is around 11km from the southern city limits of Berlin.

DHL has already entered into the relevant purchase agreement with the city of Ludwigsfelde for the property.

The new parcel center will have sorting capacity of about 50,000 shipments per hour, and will reduce burden on the firm’s two other existing parcel centers located  nearby Rüdersdorf and Börnicke.

Construction on the new parcel center will begin in summer this year, and is scheduled to be operational in 2020.

In 2016, DHL commenced the operations of its largest parcel center in Obertshausen. It is having a sorting capacity of 50,000 shipments per hour.

In 2017, the company started construction work on the similarly high-performance parcel center in Bochum, which is expected to be operational in 2019.

Currently, DHL is operating 34 parcel centers with a sorting capacity of more than 1 million parcels per hour, and is expecting an average annual parcel growth of between 5% and 7% until 2020.

Deutsche Post DHL Group’s post, eCommerce, parcel division board member Jürgen Gerdes said: "We are making our network even tighter, and continuously investing in the efficiency of our parcel infrastructure in order to carry on offering our customers the same high service quality in terms of speed and reliability in the future.

“Another reason we have become the best parcel provider in the market is because we have the best network. The new parcel center that we are now setting up is in a region with particularly strong parcel growth, indeed it represents an essential component of our strategy."

Ludwigsfelde town mayor Andreas Igel said: "The development of our Eichspitze Ludwigsfelde 4.0 industrial part is well under way. The addition of one of the most important DAX companies will trigger the further development and marketing of the area.”
